Understanding STIs: What You Need to Know
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) affect millions of people worldwide each year. Many carry no visible symptoms, meaning people can unknowingly transmit them to partners. Awareness is the first step to prevention.
The most common STIs
Chlamydia — Often has no symptoms; easily treated with antibiotics if caught early
Gonorrhea — Increasingly antibiotic-resistant; can cause infertility if untreated
Syphilis — Progresses in stages; treatable but dangerous if ignored
HIV — A lifelong condition managed with antiretroviral therapy; condoms are the best prevention
HPV — The most common STI; some strains cause genital warts or cervical cancer
Herpes (HSV) — Managed but not cured; condoms reduce transmission risk
Why regular testing matters
Most STIs are asymptomatic. Regular testing — especially if you have multiple partners — is the only reliable way to know your status and protect others.
Remember
Getting tested is not shameful — it is responsible and caring for yourself and your partner(s).
